Jacksonville is the largest city in population in Florida. The capital of Florida is Tallahassee. Florida is actually a peninsula, which means it has water on three sides of it.
State Flag
Florida's state flag is a red X on a white field, with the seal of Florida in the middle. The design for the state flag was approved by a vote in 1900. The state seal was changed a little in 1985 and so the current design of the flag has been as it is since then.
State Seal
The state seal has had a lot of changes to it over the years, but the basic design has been the same. The Indian woman in the seal has changed her clothes and taken off her feathered headdress. Also, the steamboat has been repaired a few times and the palm tree has been put in place of the cocoa tree.
Sabal Palmetto Palm/State Tree
The Sabal palmetto palm was made the state tree in 1970. The palm tree grows in almost any soil and has many uses. The tree is used to make food, medicine and also for landscaping and beauty.
Large Mouth Bass/State Fish
In 1975 legislature made the Florida largemouth bass as the official state freshwater fish. The largemouth bass seems to grow really large in Florida waters. In Florida it can reach a length of more than twenty inches and weigh more than fifteen pounds!
